Climbers' Paradise - Joshua Tree

Kalifornia ja palmut! Ekaksi ajettiin tosin katsomaan hieman tavallista suurempia jukkapalmuja Joshua Tree National Parkiin. Nyt alettiin olla jo lähellä Los Angelesia ja Kauniiden ja Rohkeiden Forrestereiden Big Bearin mökkikin melkein nähtiin ohikulkumatkalla - Big Bearin lähistöllä kyselin kaupuntätiltä, onko jaksoja todella kuvattu tällä alueella - tosifani. (;

Kansallispuistoon ajettiin itäisen sisäänkäynnin ja vierailijakeskuksen kautta. Puistossa leiriydyttiin heti Jumbo Rocks -campgroundille suurten kivenlohkareiden katveeseen.

California and palm trees! At first we drove to look at some giant yucca palms to Joshua Tree National Park. We were coming close to Los Angeles and almost got to see the Forrester family cabin at Big Bear - I even asked a saleswoman at a local market if they truly filmed the Bold and the Beautiful at this location. (; 

We entered the park from east and stopped by at the visitor center. We camped at the Jumbo Rocks campground as soon as we got there.

Ensiksi katsastettiin Skull Rock Trail, joka on saanut nimensä pääkallonmuotoisesta kivestä. Lyhyehköllä traililla seikkailtiin aavikolla, mutta välillä kiipeiltiin kivien päällä ja pujahdettiin myös niiden onkaloihin.

Firstly we took the Skull Rock Trail which is named after a giant rock resembling a skull. On this quite short trail we got to walk on the desert, climb rocks and creep into caves.

Baker Dam -polulla pystyi niin ikään seikkailemaan kiipeillen kivien päällä tai sitten seuraamaan helppokulkuista polkua. Traililla pystyi ihailla vanhaa intiaanitaidetta - tosin jotkut ajattelemattomat olivat maalanneet joidenkin merkkien päälle.

On the Baker Dam Trail we climbed even more rocks (we could have followed a passable path instead) and got to see some Indian artwork which were however vandalized with graffiti. 

Kirkkaina päivinä Keys View -näköalapaikalta saattoi nähdä Meksikoon asti. Tuona iltana siellä oli useita auringonlaskunihailijoita.

You could see Mexico on a clear day from the Keys View overlook. There were plenty of people admiring at the sunset on this spot.

Aavikon tähtitaivas oli jälleen kerran henkeäsalpaava.

A breathtaking sky full of stars is a common view on the desert.

Seuraavana päivänä Arch Rock Trail oli harmiksemme suljettu, joten viimeinen etappimme paahtavassa helteessä oli lyhyt kävely Cholla Cactus Gardenilla. Poistuessamme Cottonwoodin tietä pitkin näimme kojootin tien laidassa - ainoa bongattu eläin tuolla polttavalla aavikolla.

On the next day we had to skip the Arch Rock Trail because it was closed. Our last stop was the Cholla Cactus Garden. As we drove away to Cottonwood we saw one coyote on the road - the only animal visible on the desert on our visit.

Joshua Treen suosikiksi jäi ehdottomasti pikkuinen ravintola hieman kansallispuiston ulkopuolella Twentynine Palmsissa. Palm Kabob House tarjosi älyttömän hyvät kanashwarmat, kotitekoiset pitaleivät ja sitruunalinssikeitot.

My favorite at Joshua Tree was a tiny restaurant outside the park at Twentynine Palms. Chicken shwarma, homemade pita bread and lemon lentil soup were amazing at the Palm Kabob House.
