Sirkushuveja saatiin kuitenkin, koska parkkipaikan läheisellä joella näimme haukan, joka väijyi joella, nappasi kalan vedestä ja lensi pois.
Last but not the least of our Yellowstone experiences was the Grand Prismatic Spring which is the largest hot spring in the States. I would have wanted to see the beautiful colors of the spring but unfortunately the wind was blowing all the steam towards us and covering the spring.
Kun Grand Prismaticia ei kunnolla näkynyt höyryn ja tuulen vuoksi, päätimme kävellä jonkin matkaa Fairy Falls -nimistä trailia kiivetäksemme kukkulan rinteelle katsomaan lähdettä. Polun alkupäässä eräs setä tuli meitä vastaan ja varoitti kiipeämästä rinteelle, koska muuan japanilaisturisti oli kuollut rinteessä vain pari päivää ennen puun kaatuessa päälle. Varoituksista huolimatta kiipesimme ihailemaan kaunista lähdettä. Harmittelisin vielä tänkin päivänä, jos en olisi sitä nähnyt.
As we coudn't see the Grand Prismatic Spring because of the wind and the steam, we hiked a trail called Fairy Falls to see the spring from a hill. We were warned not to climb the hill because a Japanese tourist had got killed by a falling tree just a few days ago. In the end we decided to climb the hill and it was totally worth it. I would have regretted not to see the beautiful spring.
Yhtäkkiä tien reunassa oli pysäköitynä liuta autoja ja ihmiset rämpivät ruohikossa tien vierellä joelle päin. Autot tien laitaan pysäköitynä oli aika hyvä merkki siitä, että jossain tapahtuu jotain jännää. Ja eikös kauempana laiduntanut harmaakarhu. Se ei kertaakaan nostanut päätään, vaikka sitä oli ihmettelemässä kymmeniä ihmisiä. Karhu oli pitkän välimatkan päässä ja joen toisella puolen, joten väki uskalsi mennä sitä ihmettelemään.
Suddenly there were a dozen cars parked beside the road and people walking towards a river. Parked cars were usually a good sign that something is going on. And indeed, there was a grizzly bear across the river. It didn't rise its head even if there were many people looking at it. The grizzly was on the other side of the river and quite far away so that everyone dared to go to look at it.
Viimeiset huippuhetket Yellowstonessa vain jatkuivat, kun pääsimme ihailemaan Old Faithful -geysiirin purkautumista klo 19.10 illalla. Geysiirin purkautumisajat pystytään laskemaan hyvin tarkasti etukäteen ja aikataulut on ilmoitettu vierailijakeskuksessa. Yleensä se purkautui 65-92 minuutin välein. Vanha uskollinen on yltänyt jopa 55 metrin korkeuteen, joten purkaus oli kyllä tosi vaikuttava näky.
Our last highlights at Yellowstone were experienced at the Upper Geyser Basin where we got to see the Old Faithful erupting at 7.10 p.m. The time between eruptions can be calculated very accurately and the times are seen at the visitor centre. Usually it took 65-92 minutes between the eruptions. The Old Faithful can shoot water to a hight of 55 meters so it was a powerful sight to see.
