Cold Sweat at Zion National Park

Puuduttavien Utah-ajokilometrien jälkeen päästiin lopulta asiaan, kanjonivaltakuntaan, joka alkoi jo jonkin matkaa ennen Zionin kansallispuistoa. Zionissa piti auto jättää vierailijakeskukseen ja hypätä ilmaiseen turistibussiin, jotta pääsi Zion Canyon Scenic Drivelle.

After the grueling miles driven in Utah we were finally getting down to business in the canyon district. No more driving in Zion - the car had to be left behind at the visitor center and there was a free shuttle to Zion Canyon Scenic Drive.

Heti ensimmäiseksi puristettiin kaikki mehut irti Angels Landing Traililla. Reitin edestakainen matka oli yhteensä 8,7 km ja sen loppuosa oli kiipeilyä kahden kanjonin välisellä kapealla harjanteella. Lähtöpaikassa oli varoituksia reitillä sattuneista kuolemantapauksista ja vasta huipulle kiivetessä alkoi kunnolla ymmärtää, ettei varoitusta ollut turhaan alleviivattu.

At first we wanted to exhaust ourselves by climbing the famous Angels Landing (round trip 8,7 km). In the end the trail was only a narrow ridge between two deep canyons - no wonder they've put emotional warning signs of deaths before you entered the trail. 

Enpä usko, että Suomessa päästettäisiin turisteja kiipeilemään näin kuumottavaa reittiä. Ihan pienen harha-askeleen ottaessa olisi voinut pudota kanjoniin. Pahimmissa kohtaa reittiä oli metalliset ketjut, joista pystyi ottamaan tukea. Kylmä hiki tuli välillä, kun katsoin kapeasta kohtaa alas ja molemmilta puolilta näkyi syvä kanjoni.

I couldn't imagine that tourists in Finland would let to hike in those conditions. A misstep and you could have fallen into a deep canyon. The worst parts had metallic chains to be grabbed for assistance. At some points of the climbing part I felt cold sweat just by looking down from a narrow ridge.

Angels Landing oli ehdottomasti koko reissun mieleenpainuvin ja pelottavin trail. Huipulle (454 m) kiipesi samaan aikaan vain muutamia turisteja verrattuna siihen, kuinka paljon väkeä tuli vastaan muiden kuuluisien reittien varrella. Näinpäs erään todella korkeanpaikankammoisen ryömivän reitillä eteenpäin pahimmissa paikoissa.

Angels Landing was definitely the most memorable and scariest trail I experienced in the States. There were only some tourists climbing the top (454 m) at the same time even if the trail was very famous. It says something about the difficulty of the trail.

Toinen etappi Zionissa oli Temple of Sinawava, josta pääsi kahlaamaan Riverside Walkille. Reitti kulki Virgin Riveriä pitkin kapeassa kanjonissa. Kuuman päivän jälkeen oli mahtavaa vilvotella kurpomalla joessa, eikä kenkienkään kastuminen haitannut.

The other activity at Zion was to take the shuttle to Temple of Sinawava and take Riverside Walk. The trail went along the Virgin River surrounded by a narrow canyon. It felt good to cool off by walking in the water. Didn't mind the drenched shoes. 

Zioniin voisin palata vielä uudestaan. Haaveilen joskus näkeväni vielä kapean kanjonin, "Subwayn", jonne on vähintään 9 mailin patikointi ja jonne tarvitaan erilliset luvat. Zionissa vietettiin lopulta vain yksi kokonainen päivä ja yöksi ajettiin Hurricaneen Willow Wind RV Parkiin.

I could return to Zion some day. I'm dreaming of seeing the slot canyon, The Subway, which is a long hike away and need a special permissions to enter it. We spent only one day at the park and drove to nearby city of Hurricane to spend the night at Willow Wind RV Park.

Dead Horse Point and Canyons, Utah

Taas yksi hevospaikka! Jenkki-roadtripillä tuli vastaan useampi hevosen mukaan nimetty paikka, joista yksi oli Utahin Dead Horse Point State Park. Maisemat olivat huikeat - punaisia kanjoneita, Colorado-joki ja La Sal -vuoret. Oikeastaan tämä etukäteiskuvitelma minulla oli Grand Canyonista, joka myöhemmin osoittautuikin väriltään vaaleammaksi ja metsäisemmäksi, mitä olin kuvitellut. Kuolleen hepan paikassa on kuvattu mm. Thelma & Louise ja Mission Impossible II.

Another place with a horse! On my road trip I witnessed a couple of places which were named after horses - one of them was Dead Horse State Park in Utah. The view was stunning with red-rock canyons, Colorado River and La Sal Mountains. Actually, this was the picture I had about Grand Canyon which I saw two days later than Dead Horse Point. However, Grand Canyon turned out be lighter and forested compared to this. This state park has been a setting for many movies, including Thelma & Louise and Mission Impossible II.

Yöpaikka löytyi Singletree Campgroundilta, joka sijaitsee valtatiellä 24 (Scenic Drive) Capitol Reef National Parkin läheisyydessä.

We spent the night at Singletree Campground (on Hwy 24, Scenic Drive) in the neighborhood of Capitol Reef National Park.

Aamulla matka jatkui Scenic Driveä etelään kohti Zionin kansallispuistoa. Ennen Zionia pysähdyimme valokuvaamaan Red Canyonia. Oli ehkä hirmufiksua kiipeillä kivistä rinnettä flipflopit jalassa...

In the morning the trip continued along the Scenic Drive towards Zion National Park. Before Zion we took pictures at Red Canyon. It was super smart to go climbing the hill with flip-flops...

Ski Resort Aspen, Colorado

Eihän siellä Aspenissa mitään lunta ollut. Tai itse asiassa oli! Pari tyyppiä oli laskettelemassa pienellä lumitilkulla, joka sijaitsi pienen matkan päässä keskustasta. Joka tapauksessa Aspenin keskusta oli suloinen punatiilirakennuksineen, jotka oli rakennettu ihan hiihtokeskuksen juureen.

There was no snow in Aspen. Or in fact, there was! Some skiers were downhill skiing on a tiny snow patch just outside the center of Aspen. The town looked adorable with the red-brick buildings and the slopes starting just next to the center.

Lonely Planet recommended Justice Snow's restaurant and its gourmet burgers - they were delicious, indeed.   

Aspenin yöpymishinnat olivat hieman ylihinnoiteltuja sesonkikin huomioonottaen, joten ajoimme yöksi Grand Junctioniin Grand Vista Hoteliin. Illalla pistäydyimme paikallisessa Hootersissakin. :D Ennen lähtöä seuraavana päivänä lounastimme Grand Junctionin keskustan Dreamcafessa, josta sain varmasti reissun top 5 -listalle kuuluvan omeletin. Nam!

The prices for overnight stays were a bit high considering the season so we drove to Grand Junction to stay at the Grand Vista Hotel. In the evening we even sopped by at the local Hooters. :D On the next day we ate lunch at the city center at Dreamcafe which served definitely one of the top five omelets on the trip. Yummy!

Driving through Utah - Dinosaur

Grand Tetonista ajoimme piiitkän matkan Utahin läpi Coloradon osavaltion puolelle. Oikeasti, tuolla puuduttavalla välillä ei ole oikeastaan mitään nähtävää. Illansuussa päädytiin Utahin ja Coloradon rajalla sijaitsevalle Dinosaur National Monumentille. Monumentin läheiset maantiet olivat täynnä preeriakoiria ja niitä oli käytännössä mahdoton väistellä - raatoja pötkötti pitkin poikin teitä.

Tietenkin ilta-aikaan dinosauruksen fossiileja sisältävä museo oli kiinni, mutta ajoimme autolla ylemmäs vuorille ja teimme camp food -illallista upeissa maisemissa.

It was a looong road from Grand Teton to Colorado. We drove through the state of Utah where there was not so much to see on the way. In the evening we arrived at Dinosaur National Monument which is on the border of Utah and Colorado. The road was full of prairie dogs and it was totally impossible to try to avoid them - roadkills along the way were not exceptional. 

In the evening, of course, the museum with dinosaur fossils was closed. Instead, we drove up to the mountains and prepared camp food for dinner while admiring some spectacular views.

We spend the night at super beautiful Rofle Gap State Park in Colorado.
