Se tunne, kun pääsi viikon leireilyn jälkeen hotelliin! Minulla ja Vegasilla oli hyvä alku; ja itseasiassa fiilis pysyikin hyvänä ne muutamat päivät, mitä tuolla Nevadan casinotaivaassa vietin. Ehkä viikkojen eräilyn vastapainoksi oli ihan mukavaa höpsötellä vilkkuvien valojen, kovaäänisten ihmisten ja pelikoneiden joukossa. Vegas oli överimpi, mitä saatoin kuvitella, mutta toisaalta viihdyin paremmin, mitä olin ajatellut. Päivät vilvotellen altaalla ja ostoskeskuksissa (kuumuus oli mieletön), illat casinoilla ja ravintoloissa - aivot narikkaan.

My God, the feeling of getting a hotel room after a week of camping! Me and Vegas, we had a pretty good start. Actually, the feeling stayed good for the couple of days I spent in this heaven of casinos in Nevada. Maybe it was a good balance after hiking and camping to spend time amongst bright lights, loud people and slot machines. Vegas was more over the top than I had imagined. And I liked it more than I had imagined. The hot days at the pool and shopping centers, the nights at casinos and restaurants - just taking it easy.

From Route 66 to Valley of Fire

Grand Canyonin South Rimiltä ajoimme Williamsiin, sieltä poikkesimme legendaariselle Route 66:lle Ash Forkiin ja Seligmaniin, jotka kaikki ovat pikkupaikkoja, mutta ratsastavat 66:n maineella.

From the South Rim of Grand Canyon we drove to Williams and to Ash Fork and Seligman which lie on the legendary Route 66. The places we drove through were small but had 66 signs and souvenir shops everywhere.

Illan tullen päädyimme Arizonan ja Nevadan rajalle Hoover Damille, Hooverin padolle Colorado-joen rantaan. Ensimmäistä kertaa koko reissun aikana lämpötila oli todella trooppinen, vaikka ilta oli jo pitkällä - Kauas oli tultu sitten Yellowstonen viluisten öiden, jolloin nukuin villasukat jalassa ja pipo päässä.

In the evening we reached the Hoover Dam at the Colorado river. The Dam lies on the border of Arizona and Nevada. The climate began to be tropical for the first time on the trip although it was quite late in the evening. Well, we had driven maaany miles after the breezy nights wearing woolly socks and a hat at Yellowstone.

Yöksi ajoimme Lake Meadin kaunista rantaa pitkin Valley of Fire State Parkiin telttailemaan. Puisto sijaitsee vain 55 mailin päässä Las Vegasista. Aamupäivällä kävimme ihmettelemässä upeita aavikkomaisemia ja omituisia hiekkakivimuodostelmia. Valley of Fire teki kyllä vaikutuksen ja oli yksi lempipaikoistani koko reissulla. Siellä sai myös olla turistivirroilta rauhassa. Harmi vain, että puistossa oli niin kuuma, ettei pidemmille tutkimusmatkoille ollut mahdollista lähteä.

We ended up driving through Lake Mead Recreation Area to spend the night at the Valley of Fire State Park campground. The park is located just 55 miles away from Las Vegas. In the morning we went out to look at the outstanding desert scenery and some funny-shaped sandstone formations. I was charmed by the Valley of Fire and it was one of my favorite places on the trip. There were not too many tourists at the park, as well. Too bad it was way too hot for exploring the park further by foot.

Grand Canyon South Rim

Grand Canyonin pohjoisen puolelta ajettiin Cameronin kautta South Rimin itäiselle sisäänkäynnille. Leiri pystytettiin Desert View Campgroundille, jonne suloinen pikkupoika oli keksinyt perustaa oman yrityksensä: "Nathan's Rock Shore" myi kiviä kymmenellä sentillä. (:

Ensimmäiseksi kiiruhdettiin ostoksille Grand Canyon Village Market Placelle. Langaton netti ei tuolla alkanut pelittää, joten ajoimme puiston eteläpuolella sijaitsevaan Tusayanin kaupunkiin ottamaan yhteyttä muuhun maailmaan.

We drove via Cameron to the eastern entrance of the South Rim from the northern side of Grand Canyon. We set up camp at Desert View Campground where we saw a cute little boy who had started his business of selling rocks by the name Nathan's Rock Shore.

Firstly we hurried to go shopping at Grand Canyon Village Market Place. There was no wireless internet connection at the village so we had to drive out of the park to go online in the town of Tusayan.

Ensimmäisenä iltana lenkkeiltiin auringonlaskussa South Kaibab Trailia pitkin. Reittimme kulki kanjonin rinteen reunalla - suoraa, helppokulkuista tietä.

On the first evening we jogged along the South Kaibab Trail at sunset.

Seuraavan päivän ensimmäinen nähtävyys oli telttapaikan läheisyydessä sijaitseva Desert View Watchtower.

The first thing we saw on the next day was the Desert View Watchtower which was located near the campground.

Voi sitä hellettä, kun palasimme South Kaibab Trailille ja laskeuduimme alemmas kanjoniin! Reitti kulki Ooh Aah Pointin kautta Cedar Ridgelle, josta käännyimme takaisin ylös. Lopulta matkaa kertyi vain kolmisen mailia, mutta kuumuus sai nekin mailit tuntumaan pidemmiltä.

The heat was overwhelming when we returned to the South Kaibab Trail and descended to the canyon. The trail went via Ooh Aah Point to Cedar Ridge where we turned back to climb back up. In the end the round trip was only about three miles but the heat made it feel much longer.

Lopuksi oli pakko antautua suurimpien turistivirtojen joukkoon, parkeerata auto Bright Angel Trailin alkuun ja ottaa ilmainen bussikyyti nähtävyyksille (punainen linja Village Transferilta Abbysille). Pysähdyspaikkoina oli ainakin Mohave ja Powell Point. Etappien välit olivat melko lyhyet, joten osa matkasta taitettiin kävellen, kun bussia ei aina jaksanut odotella.

The last thing was to become a normal tourist, park the car near the Bright Angel Trail and take the free shuttle bus to see some canyons. We stopped at least at Mohave and Powell Point.

Grand Canyon North Rim

Lasketellessa alas Zionista Grand Canyonille oli ihan luonnollista poiketa ensin kanjonin pohjoisella puolella. North Rim ei ole linnuntietä pitkin kaukana turistien suosimasta South Rimistä, mutta autolla matkaa kertyy nelisen tuntia kanjoneita kiertäessä.

As we drove down from north to Grand Canyon it was easy to reach the northern part of the national park first. The distance between North and South Rim isn't much as the crow flies but it's a four-hour drive going around the canyons.

Pohjoisen puoli kanjonista oli tosiaan rauhaisampi paikka eikä telttapaikoistakaan tarvinnut siellä taistella. Teltta pystytettiin De Motten camp groundille, joka sijaitsee hieman luonnonpuiston ulkopuolella. Nähtävyyksille pääsi omalla autolla - ei pakollisia turistibusseja, jes!. Ensimmäiset ihastuneet huokaukset päästin Bright Angel Pointilla, joka on pohjoisen puolen kuuluisin näköalapaikka.

North Rim is less visited than that of South. We could easily find a spot for our tent at De Motte campground outside the park. At North Rim you could drive to the lookout points - no compulsory shuttle buses! The first time I saw this breathtaking view was at Bright Angel Spot which is the most famous lookout at North Rim.

Päivän reippailuosuus suoritettiin North Kaibab Traililla. Grand Canyonilla kävelemäni trailit eivät sinänsä olleet ihmeellisiä, koska reitti kulki alas kanjonin pohjalle ja takaisin ylös samaa reittiä. Tätä reittiä pitkin olisi voinut kävellä South Rimille asti, mutta me käännyimme takaisin Supai Tunnelin kohdalla.

We hiked down to the canyon on the North Kaibab Trail, turned back at Supai Tunnel and walked back up the same route. The trails I hiked at Grand Canyon we'rent that inspiring to my mind compared to other trails at other parks. We just hiked down and got up again..
